Once again, Nissan leads the way in automotive safety technology

Earlier this month, there was a lot of noise made about several automakers promising to develop rear occupant reminders for their vehicles. This is important because of the number of children who are injured, or worse, by being left in the back seat of hot cars. Nissan has been an industry leader in this area by offering its Rear Door Alert on its most popular models since 2018 and steadily expanding the number of vehicles with the potentially life-saving feature for the 2019 and 2020 model years. So, which Nissan vehicles have rear door alerts? Well, in short, almost all of them. The list is led by the Altima, Armada, Murano and Pathfinder, among several others. The all-new 2020 Nissan Versa also makes the cut this year.

How does it work?
“The idea was inspired when I accidentally left a pan of lasagna in the back seat of my car overnight,” Mendoza said. “The worst thing was the car smelled for days, but it made me ask myself, ‘What if I left something far more important back there?'”
Basically, the Nissan Rear Door Alert system works by noting when the rear doors are opened prior to the start of a trip and paying attention if they are opened again after the vehicle ends its journey. If the system gets activated by the rear door being opened, a message will be displayed to the driver after the transmission is put in park. Should that person walk away from the vehicle without opening the back door, a distinctive chirp from the horn will sound to get their attention.
Drivers also have to option to temporarily disable the RDA if they so choose.
