5 Steps to Keep Your Engine From Overheating
- Pull over as soon as possible when your vehicle’s engine temperature starts to reach the “H” on your dashboard. When you pull over, be sure to pull over to the side of the road away from traffic and turn off you car to allow it to cool down. If you are ever driving and notice steam coming up from underneath your hood, pull over immediately.
- Open your vehicle’s hood and allow the heat from underneath to escape to help cool your engine down quicker. Be careful and use something to open the hood that will keep you from burning your hands while doing so.
- Do not open your radiator cap until your engine cools down. A lot of pressure can be hiding underneath that cap and if you open it too soon, serious burns can occur. Wait until the you know the engine has totally cooled down before attempting to remove the radiator cap.
- Check your engine coolant tank. After you’ve pulled safely over to the side of road, opened your vehicle’s hood and let your engine cool down, check your vehicle’s engine coolant tank to see how much is left. If it’s low, fill it to the line that indicates the proper level and amount of coolant your vehicle needs.
- Determine if you can safely drive your car without causing serious damage to your engine. If you are unsure, contact a towing service and have your car towed to the nearest vehicle maintenance department.
